MOUNTAIN PLAINS

For centuries, Asteria’s human kingdom has thrived on scientific advancement principles. In a world where magical races once held the upper hand, Mirakhil Torelli united fragmented lands under a common goal: to elevate humanity through the power of science. His legacy endures, as the Torelli family still leads the empire.

At the heart of it is Kalasira, the bustling capital and the epicenter of innovation. Sprinkled with awe-inspiring castles, it’s a testament to the empire’s old nobility. The Torellis’ grand palace is the crown jewel, symbolizing their unwavering dedication to progress.

In the early days, nobles monopolized scientific research, building state-of-the-art laboratories within their lavish manors. Figures like the brilliant Alvara Tesari revolutionized energy systems, while the ingenious Dahlia Ventiri pioneered breakthroughs in transportation.

As time marched on, however, the doors to science were flung wide open. Commoners gained access to cutting-edge tools and education, joining the ranks of renowned researchers. This shift has ruffled feathers among the old guard, but ultimately, it’s propelled the Human Empire to new heights in its pursuit of scientific dominance.

General Environment:

MYSTICAL FOREST

At the center of the First Kingdom, towering trees create a stunning canopy over lakes of emerald water, and awe-inspiring ancient shrines and temples can be found scattered about this vast forest of Maz Alira. Known by its locals as “The Garden”, it is an anomaly amidst the empire. For over a thousand years, the Rekari have inhabited this land, forming laws and traditions distinct from the rest of the empire and enforcing them by hegemonic rule so fierce that not House Torelli can sway them.

One truth has always guided House Rekari: the belief that the forest is home to Alira, god of beauty. Under her care, they believe that the land flourished, and with unwavering devotion, the Rekari have labored to preserve her creation’s beauty, no matter the cost. At several points in history, they have threatened secession from the empire—or even war—to safeguard this sanctuary, and if not for the enduring amity between them and the Torelli, conflict may have erupted long ago.

Despite this stringency, Maz Alira remains open for all to witness its breathtaking wonders, a common destination for tourism and leisure. The Rekari have carefully cultivated the land and the city within, meticulously executing each modification to enhance the forest’s inherent beauty. It has become a hub for travelers and traders willing to respect the Rekari’s rules, especially for the lumbering and horticulture Maz Alira engages in through sustainable forestry practices.

Amid this unique land, a peculiar mystery endures. In three of Maz Alira’s lakes, amorphous creatures of water rarely manifest. They lack any distinctive features, and while motile, have never shown hostility. Colloquially known as “slimes”, they usually lack definitive form, but some appear in animal or rarely even human shape. Regardless, they never last long, dissolving back into regular water in days or hours. No current scientifically understood pattern or cause explains it, but the Rekari believe these slimes to be the goddess Alira herself manifest—her beauty so unattainable that even the world struggles to embody it.

General Environment:

MOUNTAIN PLAINS

The original homeland of the Hanma, one of the last formidable human tribes to unite under the banner of the burgeoning Human Empire. Yet, unlike their brethren who largely migrated close to the empire’s safe, imperial heart of Kalasira, the Hanma chose to remain rooted in the soil of their native land. Hanma Khios, for much of the empire’s existence, remained relatively distant and disconnected from the rest of the empire’s affairs, its inconstant and somewhat sparse lands giving way to slow growth and development.

In spite of its lagging history, Hanma Khios has persisted, and today is known primarily for two features. The first is alabaster, a prized export of Hanma Khios that, through its large-scale excavation beginning a few centuries ago and scaling in recent years, primarily controlled by House Alabaster, has driven the city’s surging development and growth. The second, a stark contrast to its luminous alabaster, is the melapors: a black-petalled toxic flower that is as native to region as the Hanma people. It has long been revered and cultivated by the people of Hanma Khios, a tradition inherited directly from the old tribe.

Although time has eroded knowledge of much of the Hanma’s original teachings and beliefs over centuries of gradual assimilation, its culture still pulses through the veins of Hanma Khios’s modern customs and families, with the majority of the city’s inhabitants being closely descended from the autochthonous tribe. As such, many call the people of Hanma Khios “The Extant Hanma”, one of the last true surviving tribes of the time before kings.
